The much-awaited rains during monsoon bring respite from the scorching summer heat, however along with lower temperatures the rains bring with it many infections. The increased moisture, contamination of water and stagnant water leads to the spread of many viral and bacterial infections. These infections are spread by mosquitos, contamination of water and food and airborne infections.

Mosquito borne infections.

During the monsoon season there is waterlogging on the roads, parks, and accumulated rainwater around residential areas and even in homes. The stagnant water serves as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Dengue, Chikungunya and Malaria are the mosquito-borne diseases which are spread during the monsoon season.

Dengue, Chikungunya, and malaria will present with high fever, rashes, generalised body aches. In Dengue the child may have persistent vomiting and pain abdomen and may require hospitalisation.

Water borne diseases.

Water borne diseases are caused by water and food which have been contaminated with viruses and bacteria. The common water borne diseases are gastrointestinal infections (Stomach infections) leading to diarrhea, vomiting, pain abdomen and may lead to dehydration. Infants and young children are more likely to suffer from gastrointestinal infections.

Typhoid, paratyphoid fever, hepatitis(jaundice) and cholera are the other common water borne diseases. Typhoid fever will lead to a prolonged and high fever and is treated with antibiotics.

The common airborne respiratory diseases are cough and colds, Influenza (flu), throat infections and pneumonia. Children and seniors are more prone to get severe illness.
